Monroe Salt Works is recognized throughout North America, Europe and Japan as the world’s Preeminent Salt Glaze Studio. Salt glazing was developed in Germany in the 15th Century. At the height of the firing process, handfuls of salt are thrown into the roaring blaze. When the salt hits the white-hot fire, it is vaporized and the salt vapor combines with the firing pottery to create the distinct glaze. This creates surface and color differences in each piece; some pieces receive large amounts of salt vapor and others little.
You will find salt glazed pottery to be rich and compelling. The mark of the firing is evident on each piece and no two pieces are ever alike.
